Description

Product Overview

Cumin Seeds are obtained from the dried fruits of the Cuminum cyminum plant, a flowering species belonging to the Apiaceae family. Native to the Irano-Turanian region, cumin is widely valued for its warm aroma, earthy flavor, and extensive culinary uses across global cuisines in both whole and ground form.

India is the world’s largest producer of cumin, contributing nearly 70% of global production, while countries such as Syria, Turkey, UAE, and Iran also play important roles in global supply. Cumin seeds are extensively used in spice blends, curries, soups, snacks, and traditional recipes due to their distinctive taste and aroma.

Five Main Types of Cumin

1. Brown/Common Cumin

Standard yellow-brown seeds with a warming, slightly sweet, nutty flavour. Widely available in whole and powdered form.

2. Black Cumin (Kala Zeera)

Scientifically known as Cuminum nigrum or Bunium persicum. Has a bitter taste and is commonly used in Mughal and Kashmiri cuisine.

3. White Cumin (Safed Jeera)

Lighter in colour with a mild, sweet, and delicate flavour, ideal for rice dishes, curries, and desserts.

4. Green Cumin

The unripe version of brown cumin with a pungent, smoky, and bitter flavour used in Indian and Mediterranean dishes.

5. Brown Cumin (North African)

Bigger and fatter seeds with a warm, earthy, and peppery flavour used in Indian, Mexican, and North African cooking.
